We had the pleasure of fishing with Art Braswell and his crew from Yorktown Va on Thursday. We started off catching bailer size dolphins with a few gaffer size fish mixed in along with a bonus sailfish! The kids did a good job putting them in the box. There were a few tunas being caught by the other charter boats nearby, so we switched gears and put the bigger gear out. Our only bite was a hungry white marlin….glad we got him! Thanks

Catching Up!

We've been slacking on the fishing reports a bit! We fished the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament in Morehead City earlier this month. Congrats to the team on the Double B! Thanks again to the Finsss team for fishing the ladies tournament with us. We had a blast!

Our dolphin fishing has been good for the last couple weeks out of Oregon Inlet. There has been a few yellowfin tunas and a some billfish around too…..

The fishing and the wind picked up for our trip Tuesday. Thanks to Jesse and his buddies for fishing with us today. They did a great job dealing with the choppy conditions. Weekend Fishing

I cant say much for the meat fishing over the weekend. The conditions were beautiful, but the fish weren't there in enough numbers to support the amount of boats that were fishing. We did catch a few tunas and some dolphin on every trip. The weather was perfect and our crowds had a good time

The good news is that the boats fishing south of us in Morehead City and Hatteras have had real good dolphin fishing, so they should be moving our way. There were also 20+ blue marlin seen yesterday by the fleet of boats fishing out of Hatteras.

First Billfish!

Friday we caught our first billfish of the year. After catching a limit of bailer dolphin and a couple of 40 lb yellowfins, we hooked a 200 lb blue marlin on 30 lb test tackle. One hour later we released her unharmed! Thanks!

Saturday the meat fishing slowed down a bit for the fleet. We did catch our first white marlin of the year……Thanks for checking in.

More great weather and good rockfishing. We stayed in the KDH, Kitty Hawk area for most of the day. Bill earned a NC citation for his 35 pound rockfish. Pretty work!

Austin and his buddies joined us today for his bachelor party. We caught a couple of yellowfins in the morning which seem to be rare this fall. Our action picked up a bit in the afternoon with the blackfins but was still scrappy to say the least. There were a lot of throwbacks today. Ed did land a citation 31 lb fish. Thats a nice blackfin considering that a NC citation is 20lbs! Thanks for the pretty weather!

Action all day today! It was a pleasure having Rob and his group today. They did a great job keeping up with all of the bites that we had. 189 lbs of tuna total with a 21 pound fish that earned a state citation. Thanks!

Wedding Party Friday

Joey and his gang joined us on friday. The day started off a bit choppy, but everyone hung in there and we ended up with a meat slam! A couple nice yellowfin tunas, a bunch of blackfin tunas, a couple of dolphin and a nice wahoo!

The international CAT service rep team fished with us today. Plenty of action today....Started off on a slick catching a few dolphin. Put the spread out and caught a sailfish pretty quick. Another boat nearby found a pallet that had been floating for a while that was full of dolphin. We ran to him and caught what we needed for dinner. There was enough dolphin there for 3 or 4 boats! We spent the rest of the trip looking for a billfish and ended up with three more white marlin. Everyone on the boat got to catch a billfish today. Buddy from Classy Riders Car Wash in Elizabeth City brought out some of his grandkids and some family members while they had their family reunion to fish the farm pond today. Plenty of bass and bluegills kept the little ones busy. Good to get out of the city every once and a while and take a kid fishing!

Fishing was scrappy for the fleet today. The great dolphin fishing from yesterday disappeared, so we switched gears and tried the tuna hole. We came up with a decent catch including a 50 lb tuna on light tackle that took 40 minutes to land.....good job. Plenty of variety this morning including: a sailfish release, blackfin tuna, yellowfin tuna and dolphin. The weather started off with some thunderstorms in the morning which cleared and it turned into a pretty day. Thanks

We had the F.I.N.N.S team on board for the Alice Kelly Release Tournament again this year......A big time was had! We pulled off a white marlin reaching for the leader and caught 20 dolphin around a floating minnow bucket. Thanks Again!

We have run a few trips since our last report. The weather has been hit or miss as well as the fishing. We did get Timmy and his crew from Camden out on Saturday. The ride out was a bit rough, but it calmed down as the day went on. We were having tough luck early in the day. We jumped off a white marlin and missed a few other bites. Their patience paid off and at the end of the day we were called by another boat who had found a large school of dolphin close by. We ran to the spot and caught our dolphin pretty quick. A few other boats got in on the action as well. Thanks

We had the opportunity to take George and his boys on an inlet half day trip today. The weather finally broke out of the southwester that had been persisting for the last week and a half and we enjoyed a light south east wind and calm conditions. The bluefish were snapping and the guys did a good job with them. We were able to fill up a five gallon bucket in no time. I hope you enjoyed the fish! Good luck in Wilmington guys!

Southwester

A constant Southwest wind has put our offshore trips on hold for the last few days. It makes the water on the beach cold and the water offshore rough....We hope to be getting back out this Friday and Saturday though.

The boats that fished in the Boat Builders Tournament found some good sailfish action south of diamond shoals over the weekend. The winning boat had 16 releases in two days. Hopefully they are moving on up......Thanks

Fridays Report

It wasn't quite a skunking but it was close enough. The fishing has slowed down a bit and I knew that we were only go to be presented with a couple of opportunities today and we needed to take advantage of them. Well, the first one was a white marlin. Will did a good job hooking the fish but when the rod was passed to one of the other anglers in the party the line somehow got wrapped around the rod tip. Well, you can guess what happened then. Zing-powwww. Ok, our second chance was a tuna bite on our white marlin tackle. The 50 pound tuna battled Brian for almost an hour before gaining the advantage and pulling the hook 10 feet from the leader. Bummer!

We did catch a few small dolphin for dinner. The weather was pretty other than some showers first thing in the morning. Thanks Beasley, we enjoyed your company!

Brian and his family joined us for another pretty day on the ocean today. We found a nice bunch of dolphin first thing and caught around 30. After looking around for a while and picking at the dolphin, we were jumped by a few sailfish. We hooked 1 out of 2 and unfortunately pulled him off while the mate was reaching for the leader. Bummer! Setting back out, we had a another sail on our long rigger bait that jumped off shortly after being hooked. Tough luck with them today! At the end of the day we found another really nice school of dolphin and finished up our limit of 60 fish. Fish fry tomorrow.......Thanks!

Ken and Dianne Leopold from Ohio joined us on Friday. We started off slow but ended with a bang today! We steamed to an area that a few other boats were catching some dolphin and reporting a few blue marlin sightings. We got to the eastern side of the change where no one had been yet and found a big bunch of dolphin around some grass and trash. Ken and Dianne did a great job bailing dolphin. We got our limit pretty quick since there was only two of them on the boat. Two boats steamed to us and were able to get their limit as well! Good to see all the fish around.

We set the marlin spread out and had a blue marlin eat three of our baits without getting hooked! Bummer.

Shortly after that, another blue marlin was hooked on our long rigger bait. After a short battle he broke off! Bummer!

In that same area today, there were big bluefin tunas caught, several blue marlins, white marlins and some yellowfins as well. The conditions were right! Glad to see all the action, fun day.

Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament

We spent all of last week in Morehead City for the annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament. We fished 4 out of the 6 days, Monday through Saturday. The weather was pretty all week, but I cant say much for the fishing. I think that 1/3 of the billfish caught last year were caught this year.....something like that. Anyway, we did catch a blue marlin on our third day of fishing. Although, it was just short of the 110 inch tournament minimum length we felt fortunate to catch one! A good time was had by all and look forward to next year. Thanks Alex, Brent, Dave and Kent for a great week.

Blue Marlin

Saturday we had a request for meat fishing. Our group wanted nothing to do with a marlin when they saw the flag hanging in the rigger from the day before. So, we returned to the tuna grounds in hopes of better conditions. We set out and no more than 10 minutes later this blue marlin came in and ate one of our tuna baits! We fought the fish for over 2 hours on 50 lb class tackle. The leader was in sight a few times early in the fight but was never close enough to get. The fish took a long run and unfortunately tail wrapped itself. When the fish finally came up , she was dead, so we landed him and took him to the dock. His weight was around 280 lbs. This fish would typically be released....

The tuna fishing was hit or miss on Friday. Some boats had 6, some boats had none. We fell into the middle of the pack with 3 nice yellowfins and a gaffer dolphin for the guys from Philly. We had a double header of white marlins come into the spread and we managed to catch and release one! Thanks

Wednesday we found a grass line in the morning and picked out a decent catch of dolphin for JB, Marvin and his gang.

Thursday we headed south again with Dave and his crew to look for the same change and it was out of reach for us! So, out went the tuna spread. We hit the yellowfins a few times and ended up with a catch of 40-50lb class of yellowfins. Later on in the day we found a floating 2x8 that we caught some dolphin around. Glad to see the tunas! Gaffer Dolphins and Blue Marlins

Bert Magee and his group joined us from Raleigh Saturday. A bumpy ride out turned into a really pretty day. We hit a small weedline first thing and caught a dozen nice size gaffer dolphins to give them plenty of meat to take home. Then we put out some baits in hope of a big bite. We got our bite but unfortunately pulled the hook on a blue marlin.....bummer! There were several blue marlin seen and caught today throughout the fleet.

Both days we returned to the tuna fleet east of the inlet. It was either you got hit by the big eyes or you had a long day. We fell into the long day category both days.......Tough fishing for the majority of the fleet. We did scrap out a few dolphin, tile fish, and sea bass to send our crews home with some meat. We enjoyed the company and the great weather!

Bigeye Tunas

We started off where we left off yesterday with the bluefins. We caught and released around 12 fish in the 20-30lb range. We left there and headed south to some boats that were reporting a scattered yellowfin bite. When we got there we hooked 7 big eyes at once and landed 4. All of these fish were in the 100 lb range. Plenty of meat! There were good catches of yellowfin from some of the boats in the fleet as well. Thanks, Huck

Bluefins and makos

We caught 10 bluefins and a mako today. We could only keep one of each, but the bluefins were a nice class of fish in the 40 lb range and provided plenty of action. We also had an encounter with a bigger mako today that worked out in the makos favor! The mako that we did catch weighed 85lbs. Thanks, Huck

We finally got to go fishing today after a few weather cancellations. It was worth the wait! Bluefin action was fast and furious today.....the fish that we kept was 186lbs (69").

Boatyard

We spent a few days in the boatyard this week getting the bottom cleaned up for another season. The boat is back at Pirates Cove and we have plenty of open dates.

There has been some good bluefin tuna fishing recently. I hope that they stick around for a while. The boats that have been fishing have been averaging 7-15 releases a day with the fish being anywhere from 60 - 190lbs. By law, you can keep one of these fish per day. We helped Charles take the charter boat "The Country Girl" to Mexico. "Brrrrrrrrrr" is all that I have to say! We left Pirates Cove on Jan 3rd with The Obsession and the Qualifier. The wind blowing NW 25-30, a high temp of and the spray freezing all over the boat.

It took us 6 days to get to Isla Mujeres, Mexico.

Brian McAndrew, his son Thomas, and his buddies joined us for a pretty day on the ocean Wednesday. The dolphin got after us early in the wide open and we caught a 37lb citation plus several 15lbers. Later in the morning we had some sailfish action in the baits. They were not very aggressive, we did get a shot at 1 or 2 of them but they didn't come tight. We finished off the day bailing a real pretty class of dolphin around a piece of floating 8x8 timber. Thanks

White Marlin

The white marlin bite has been good out of Oregon Inlet recently, so we rode along on the Marlin Gull for a day. We had a good time taking shots at these fish today. Alot of them were coming to the teasers and flat lines.

Alice Kelly Release Tournament

What a difference a day can make! We started off in the tuna hole hoping to just get a handful of bites. Another captain reported a change 8 miles outside of us, so we quickly aborted the tuna plan since it has been so slow and ran to it. We found a big grass line and immediately caught a 25 lb dolphin and then picked our way down it the rest of the day. We ended up with 8 nice 15-25lb dolphin and 30 bailers. 260 lbs of dolphin. Charlie and his buddies from Jersey wanted to catch dolphin today. We found a beautiful grass line southeast of the inlet. We fished it hard along with 3 other boats and there was only about a dozen fish caught on it between the 4 of us. So, we went to plan B and tried some bottom ground down there that we have never tried before. It paid off, and we caught a limit of big seabass and blueline tiles. As soon as your rig hit the bottom you would get a bite. Doubles of bass and tiles were common. 265 lbs total

Quality not quantity. Dr B, and his buddies wanted to catch a tuna, so we gave it the effort, but the tuna bites were few an far between for the fleet. We did catch one nice 60 pounder on the bar. Along the way his niece's boyfriend visiting from the cheq republic released a white marlin. This was his first trip in the ocean! We also caught a gaffer, a few nice tilefish, couple of seabass and released a reef donkey......Thanks

Make up trip today. Our group was from as far as South Carolina up to Pennsylvania. We had at least 10 tuna bites today and held onto 4 of them and caught a dolphin. Nice class of fish and a pretty day. Everyone went home with plenty of meat. Thanks

On Thursday our group needed to be back at the dock early, so we ran to one of the towers 20 miles out. The amberjack fishing was real good. We caught them on high speed vertical jigs and topwater plugs. At least five fish were fighting to get the top water plug every time it hit the water. All these fish were in the thirty to fifty pound range too! Great sport on the spinning rods! Thanks.

The boat in the picture hit the bridge pilings on the way out this morning. The main span has been real shallow recently, so we have been using the south span. There was a work barge in the south span which blocked half of the opening, not to mention the current.

The day started off with REAL thick fog. Once we finally cleared the inlet and got into the ocean it lasted for another 15 miles before it burned off.

Beautiful day on the water. We went south again and found some grass. 30 gaffers and 2 blackfin tunas. Fun day.

We have fished 5 days since the last report. Fishing has been hit or miss with the tunas and still real good gaffer dolphin fishing. We had a bottom fishing request one day and caught a nice catch of blueline tiles. Mate, Brian took the camera with him to fish the Big Rock tournament last week, which explains the lack of pictures. The posted picture is a 40lb wahoo that they caught in the tournament. They also released a blue marlin that was just short of the tournaments length requirements. Thanks

Once again, really good dolphin fishing today, 337 lbs. We pulled away from the dolphin around lunch time to look for a blue marlin. Not long after we got our chance but he didn't cooperate!! Excellent Fishing for Ken Bateman and his crew. The big dolphin were flying into the baits 4 and 5 at a time! Multiple hookups were common throughout the day. As you can see in the picture above we had three on at one time. These fish are alot of fun on light tackle and put on a great show. By 2 o'clock we had 428lbs of dolphin and were headed for the dock. We also had an encounter with a large mako shark. We hooked him twice but he made short work of the mono leader......

The bluefin tuna continue to hang around. This weekend looks like both days will be nice weather days. Under federal regs you can keep one of these fish which average around 100-200 lbs and bring more than enough sushi for everyone. 252-216-5880

We put the Samanna back in the water today after a 3 day boat yard visit. Pressure washed, waxed the hull, painted the bottom and we are ready to roll for another season!

We are fishing on Sunday and looking forward to it.

Fishing for the school size (100-200+lb) bluefin tuna has been really good over the last few weeks. 20+ releases in a morning have been common. You can keep one for the table and the rest must be released.

Lots of action for Van and Ronnie on Monday. Steady bite all day. We ended up with 10 tunas, 2 little dolphin, and a citation 50 lb wahoo! Lots of throwback tunas today as well. Thanks

We fished Saturday with Steve, Andy, Eric, Nam, and the rest of the Snap on crew. The weather was great and we enjoyed the company. The trolling bite was slow in the morning, so we tried some bottomfishing and were rewarded. Alot of the drops we made came up with double header tilefish. After we caught our limit of tiles we put the spread back out and Eric caught a 40lb citation wahoo on a bait that he rigged. Plenty of meat to take back to DC. Thanks.

The weather has not cooperated at all for the last 10 days or so....The boats that did finally make it out today had good tuna fishing with most boats catching their limits of yellowfins with some blackfins mixed in. Another front moved through this afternoon that will keep everyone tied to the dock for the next few days. Depending on the weather we will be fishing on Saturday......

October Sailfish

We fished with Greg Cambell on Thursday. We caught a mix of yellowfins and blackfin tunas. Late in the day we released a sailfish...Forgot the camera! Looks like we will be blown out for the weekend, hope to make it out on Monday.

We have been tied to the dock for the last 2 weeks waiting for the wind to quit blowing. Sunday, there was still a big swell in the ocean but no wind. We took Rick and his guys on the Country Girl. We waited in the inlet for 30 minutes with another 5 or 6 boats for the tide to come in and the bar to become more manageable. Once we finally got out we found a grass line, stayed on it all day and came up with a great catch of dolphin on light tackle. 260lbs Thanks

We went marlin fishing with Kenny and the Doc in the northeast today. Kenny hooked and caught the only white marlin we saw today. We also caught 20 dolphin while looking around. Thanks

Birthday trip for Brian Parrish. He got to catch the white marlin early and then we worked on the dolphin for a while and ended up with 40 fish. We went back to trolling and hooked another white marlin but he pulled the hook before we got to the leader......Also had a blue marlin in the flat lines but he wouldnt eat! Fun day with lots of action. Thanks.
